Version 1.1: Save from Safari / Browser Saves is included in the current App Store release.
Save from Safari changes the role of the Mac app. It is not only a larger place to search and organise the same journal: it becomes a browser-to-journal intake hub for ideas discovered while you are already researching online.
The flow is deliberately queued. You confirm the current page in Safari, continue browsing without forcing The Gift Journal to launch, then review and enrich captures later on Mac, iPhone or iPad.
First-time setup
- Install The Gift Journal for Mac.
- Launch the Mac app at least once so Safari can register the bundled extension.
- Open Safari → Settings → Extensions.
- Enable Save to The Gift Journal.
After setup, confirmed pages can be queued even when The Gift Journal is not running.
Save the current page from Safari
- While viewing a page you may want to remember, open Save to The Gift Journal in Safari.
- Check the page title, website/domain and shortened URL shown in the popup.
- Choose Save to The Gift Journal to confirm the capture.
Opening the Safari control by itself does not save anything. The page is queued only after that explicit confirmation, which helps prevent accidental saves from the wrong tab.
The Browser Saves queue
A confirmed page is written locally first to a durable Browser Saves inbox. Safari stays in front and The Gift Journal does not auto-launch. Private iCloud transport then makes the inbox available to your other supported devices when sync is available.
- Multiple pages can accumulate across browsing sessions.
- The queue survives The Gift Journal quitting and reopening.
- The Mac title bar shows Browser Saves with a numeric count badge; iPhone and iPad provide their own persistent Browser Saves entry point.
- The queue shows enough title, site and time context to recognise each capture without turning the badge into notification debt.
Review, enrich and approve on Mac, iPhone or iPad
- Open Browser Saves on a supported device.
- Choose a queued page and select Review.
- Review the saved title, source link and available product imagery, then add or correct details if useful.
- Choose the destination: the appropriate Person or My Wishlist.
- Choose Save only when the capture is ready to become part of the journal.
Cancel means “not now”. It leaves the page in Browser Saves. A capture is consumed only after a successful journal Save or after a separate explicit Remove action that you confirm.
Use Open Page whenever you need the original source for context before deciding.
What Safari Quick Add does — and does not — collect
The Safari extension is intentionally thin and privacy-minimised. It acts only on the current page you deliberately invoke it on. It does not monitor browsing history and does not run background browsing surveillance.
The queued capture needs only lightweight page metadata such as the URL, page title and timestamp. Retailer/product enrichment remains part of the native app review experience rather than being duplicated in the Safari extension.
Check Safari setup/status from the Mac app
In Version 1.1, Mac Settings includes a Save from Safari setup/status area with live enabled, disabled or unavailable state plus Open Safari and Refresh status actions.
If Safari Quick Add is not available, first confirm that the Mac app has been launched once and that Save to The Gift Journal is enabled in Safari → Settings → Extensions.
Why this makes the Mac app different
On iPhone and Watch, capture is about the thought that appears in the moment. On Mac, browsing often is the discovery process. Save from Safari lets that discovery feed a deliberate approval queue instead of forcing every promising page to become a fully edited Idea immediately.
That gives the desktop app its own role in the ecosystem: collect while researching, decide when ready, then turn only the worthwhile captures into journal memory.
