People

A Person is the main organising object in The Gift Journal. Ideas, Hints, Occasions, Context and history build around that relationship over time. Version 1.4 extends that memory in both directions: a Person can have gifts you gave them, gifts they received from other people, and gifts you received from them.

Open a Person

1. Open People.
2. Select the Person you want.
3. Use the Person sections to move between Ideas, Hints, About and History.

Use the People filters

Version 1.4 aligns the iPhone and Mac People filters. My circle keeps the directory owner-centred, while All people also includes supporting giver records that may exist only because they gave a gift to somebody else.

• My circle — people with a direct journal relationship to you;
• All people — every Person record;
• Gift givers — people present as givers in received-gift history;
• With ideas — people with saved Gift Ideas;
• With hints — people with saved Hints.

Edit a Person

1. Open the Person.
2. Open the Person actions menu.
3. Choose Edit person.
4. Update the name, photo, birthday or notes.
5. Add or amend thoughtful profile information such as theme tags, dislikes or Avoid gifting notes where useful.
6. Tap Save.

Add and maintain Practical Details

Version 1.4 adds optional Practical Details to a Person. They are flexible labelled values rather than a fixed regional size or measurement questionnaire, and each entry can be an ordinary Detail or an explicit Avoid.

1. Open the Person and choose Edit person.
2. Open Practical Details.
3. Add a label and current value — for example a size, favourite format or another useful fact.
4. Choose Detail for ordinary information or Avoid for a negative constraint.
5. Apply the detail, then use the top-level Save on the Person to persist the edited Person.

Current values can show a subdued Updated month/year. This is quiet freshness context only: Version 1.4 does not add stale warnings, review reminders or a Practical Details task list.

When a detail changes

Use Record a change when the information genuinely changed over time. The former current value moves into Previous values, where it can keep an optional effective date. A detail can retain multiple previous values.

Use Correct information when the current value was simply wrong. That replaces the erroneous value without manufacturing a false historical event.

Edit Previous values

While editing the Person, expand Previous values to review the timeline. Historical values and their dates can be edited or removed before the parent Person is finally saved. Recording the unchanged current value does not create a duplicate history row.

Blank draft rows are discarded. Saved Details appear only when present. A directly relevant Detail may inform Thoughtful Inspiration when traceable to the journal; an explicit Avoid takes precedence over conflicting positive evidence.

Remember gifts a Person received

Version 1.4 lets an ordinary Person have Gifts they received, without confusing recipient and giver roles.

1. Open the Person.
2. Choose Add received gift.
3. The Person is fixed as the recipient.
4. Add zero or more real giver People, or leave the giver unknown.
5. Record the date as exact, month and year, year only, or unknown.
6. Optionally add an occasion/reason, photo, link, notes or price.
7. Save.

Person history distinguishes Given by you, Gifts they received, Gifts they gave where relevant, and Gifts received from them when you were the recipient. The same underlying gift is searchable by recipient, giver, title and occasion/reason context.

Add or change a Person photo

1. Open the Person and choose Edit person.
2. In Photo, choose Add photo or Change photo.
3. Choose Take Photo or Choose from Photo Library.
4. Save the Person.

If a Person was created from Apple Contacts, the journal may retain a link to the source contact, but The Gift Journal’s Person record remains part of your journal.

Birthdays

When you add a birthday to a Person, The Gift Journal maintains the canonical Birthday relationship for that Person. Birthday is intentionally the one-person Occasion exception: it belongs to that Person rather than becoming a general multi-person planning group.

To change a birthday:

1. Open the Person.
2. Choose Edit person.
3. Change the birthday.
4. Save.
5. The corresponding Birthday Occasion follows the canonical Person birthday.

Add thoughtful Context

Context is for durable relationship memory rather than a specific product suggestion — for example a new hobby, a preference, a life change or something to avoid.

1. Open the Person.
2. Go to About.
3. Add or edit Context.
4. Write the useful memory.
5. Save it.
6. Pin especially important Context when you want it to remain prominent.

Add an Occasion for a Person

1. Open the Person.
2. Open the Person actions menu.
3. Choose Add occasion.
4. Choose the Occasion type/date/recurrence.
5. Review reminder and planning options.
6. Save.

Continue on Apple Watch

From a Person on iPhone you can choose Continue on Apple Watch. This does not open a full Person record on the Watch. It prepares a small From iPhone capture context so the Watch can quickly record an Idea or Hint for that Person. See the Apple Watch guide.

Delete a Person

1. Open the Person actions menu.
2. Choose Delete person.
3. Review the warning carefully.
4. Confirm only if you intend to remove that Person and the affected journal relationships.

Deletion is deliberately explicit because the Person is the anchor for long-term journal history.
